One of the great advantages of an electric car is that it saves you money. That's because electricity is less expensive than gasoline. According to Natural Resources Canada estimates, it could even cost up to 4 times less per kilometer driven.The savings you could make per year? Driving 20,000 km in a compact electric car could save you between $1,500 and $1,700, according to Hydro-Québec.
The amount saved depends on several factors, such as the price of gas and electricity, the number of kilometers driven, the model of car and the technology used. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), for example, has two engines and uses electricity for a portion of the trip and gasoline afterwards to ensure a greater range. A fully electric vehicle (FEV) uses only electricity.
Save money on the maintenance cost of an electric or hybrid car
Electric vehicles also cost less to maintain than gasoline-powered vehicles. Depending on the type of car (fully electric or plug-in hybrid), there are advantages such as
- No or fewer oil changes
- Brakes last longer (because there is a regenerative braking system that wears out the brake discs and pads less)
- The structure of the electric motor is simpler, therefore requiring fewer parts changes (such as coolant, oil filters or timing belt) and fewer visits to the garage

Government subsidies for buying or leasing an electric car
Even though electric cars cost less in energy and maintenance, they often cost more than gasoline-powered vehicles. The good news is that the Quebec government is offering individuals a $3,500 subsidy for the purchase of a used electric vehicle.
Road privileges for electric cars
Quebec offers green license plates to eligible electric or plug-in hybrid car owners. Depending on the region, they give access to certain privileges, such as
- The ability to drive in reserved lanes
- Free and reserved parking at several locations
- Free access to toll roads or ferries
The advantage of the electric car for the environment
Another advantage: the electric car does not emit greenhouse gases when it is driven. According to Hydro-Quebec, if we consider the life cycle of a car (including the materials used to build it), an electric car will emit 65% less greenhouse gases than a gasoline car for 150,000 km driven. The longer the distance traveled, the greater the ecological advantage of electric cars: after 300,000 km, they emit 80% less greenhouse gases.
Another advantage of electric cars is that, in addition to reducing environmental pollution, they reduce the noise pollution created by combustion engines.
